Ulladu Narpadu

Forty Verses on Reality

THIS IS MY favorite work of Sri Ramana’s. It strikes me as the most complete, the deepest, and the most tersely expressed.

Sixteen years after I wrote the previous sentences, I learned that Sri Sadhu Om, Ramana’s famous disciple, agreed with me. He told an interviewer that this is Ramana’s “most important work.”

The original, composed in classical Tamil, is called Ulladu Narpadu. It has been translated into English under the names Forty Verses on Reality, Truth Revealed, Forty Verses on Existence, and Reality in Forty Verses.

Sri Ramana himself translated this poem into Telugu and Malayalam, suggesting that he thought it was special.

This English translation was published anonymously but we believe it to have been done by Arthur Osborne. We have reprinted it by permission from the October 1964 issue of the Mountain Path Journal published by Sri Ramanasramam.
