A peer-reviewed multidisciplinary academic journal that combines the perspectives of modern academic fields (neuroscience, philosophy, etc.) with what its editors call "mysticism" -- i.e., enlightenment traditions. Some of the contributors have considerable meditation experience. Dr. Charles T. Tart: Home Page and Virtual Library
Dr. Tart was a professor of psychology at the University of California for 28 years and is now on the faculty at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology. His website has scientific papers and bibliographies related to his research interests, which include altered states of consciousness, dreams, Gurdjieff, hypnosis, meditation, mindfulness, personal growth, parapsychology, and transpersonal psychology. We have never met him, but his site was obviously made by a very kind and generous human being.

Indology Resources at UCL

Variety of academic resources at University College London for studying Buddhism and Hinduism. It has a large collection of Buddhist and Hindu scriptures available from both a web page and an FTP server. We didn't check whether these are two different collections or the same. The FTP server itself is here.

Gita Supersite

This site offers only a single book, but it's one of the greatest ever written -- the Bhagavad Gita. The site is a bibliophile's dream come true; you can look at numerous translations and commentaries in several languages simultaneously. Someday, we hope all books will be published this way. The site belongs to the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.

U.G. Krishnamurti

Complete text of numerous books and articles by U.G. Krishnamurti. (This is the "anti-guru" Krishnamurti, not the famous one.)

BrainWave Generator

This program generates sounds that help put you in meditative states. To be more precise, it uses binaural-beat technology to entrain brain frequencies. Download this program for free, and if you like it, pay for it later. From the website of the publisher, Noromaa Solutions.

Huge site with articles by excellent professional writers about a wide variety of religions. It's the Time Magazine of religion, staffed by pros and funded by venture capitalists. There's nothing else like it on the Net (or in print).

Extensive links to sites in variety of categories including personal growth, health and healing, meditation, yoga, the new age, spiritual teachings, communities, and environmental awareness.

YREC (Yoga Research and Education Center)
This is probably the best place on the web to get an overview of yoga and look for reference materials about it. More than 60 articles explain its history, varieties, basic ideas, etc. The site is written primarily for general readers by people who have both practical experience and academic expertise. It also includes an excellent glossary and a selective list of links. YREC was founded in 1996 by Georg Feuerstein, a well-known author of more than 30 books.

Nonduality Salon

A sort of combined clearinghouse and coffeehouse for practioners of Advaita Vedanta (Jnana Yoga) and other people who are drawn to a nondual perspective. Numerous links of various kinds. Two especially interesting features are a list of 200 "confessors" and an excellent (extraordinary, really) mailing list whose participants include several of the confessors. It's our impression that this list has more realized participants than any other list or electronic forum we've found. The list is very friendly and beginners feel welcome.

Buddhist Studies and the Arts

Excellent list of annotated links to Buddhist websites. The name is misleading; the scope goes far beyond the arts. This site is maintained by a faculty member at Washington University in St. Louis.

Gurdjieff Forum

A moderated mail list devoted to the ideas of G.I. Gurdjieff, P.D. Ouspensky and their descendants. Message archives go back to 1996.

If you become curious about the philosophical and historical aspects of Advaita, head for this site. It gives a splendid overview of the chief tenets, authors, and texts of Advaita Vedanta, remaining accessible to a general reader while maintaining a scholarly standard of accuracy and selection. There are also some interesting links and a guide to Sanskrit transliteration.

An extraordinarily good (and beautiful) site by Mike Magee and Jan Bailey with translations, commentaries, summaries, articles, glossary, and bibliography. Scholarly yet devotional and accessible.

Sadhu! The Theravada Buddhism Web Directory

An excellent list of approximately 400 annotated links. The blurbs are unusually informative, and the selections betray an interesting individual sensibility.
