David
Godman
1953
David Godman is the author and editor of ten extraordinarily
informative books about Ramana Maharshi and his
disciples. David's first book, Be
As You Are, has become the standard anthology
of Ramana Maharshi's writings the one we
recommend to friends who want to read about Sri
Ramana for the first time. David's later books
are all concerned in some way with Sri Ramana's
impact on other people. Five of those books are
biographies of Self-Realized disciples, and the
most recent one, The
Power of the Presence Part Two, is a collection
of memoirs by people whose lives were transformed
by Sri Ramana.
|
|
David
was born in 1953 in England. During his second
year at Oxford University, while reading Ramana
Maharshi's writings for the first time, he fell
into a state of silence which transformed the
way he viewed himself and the world. Finding it
impossible to study for exams, he dropped out
in his final year and rented a house in rural
Ireland, where he read Sri Ramana's books and
practiced self-inquiry.
|
|
|
| The
following year, in 1976, he decided to take a short
trip to India. Despite his intention to stay for
only six weeks, he has been there almost continuously
ever since, residing mainly in Tiruvannamalai where
Ramana Maharshi's ashram is located.
From
1978 to 1985 he was the ashram's librarian.
In
1993 he spent four years with Papaji (H.W.L. Poonja)
in Lucknow where he wrote Nothing
Ever Happened.
David
is the author or editor of ten published books
which are described below.

No
Mind I Am The Self
By David Godman
· · · · · · · · · · · ·
David
Godman's second book describes the lives and teachings of two self-realized
sages, Sri Lakshmana Swamy and Mathru Sri Sarada. The book contains an extraordinary
blow-by-blow documentary of Self-realization: a partial transcript of remarks
made by Mathru Sri Sarada as her I-thought sank into the heart center and
dissolved. Mathru Sri Sarada is a disciple of Sri Lakshmana Swami, who in
turn was a disciple of Ramana Maharshi.

Nothing
Ever Happened
By David Godman
· · · · · · · · · · · ·
This massive three-volume
biography of H.W.L. Poonja, widely known as Papaji, is probably the most
informative account ever written of the life and teachings of a self-realized
person. Papaji is largely responsible for the recent surge of interest in
applied Advaita in the West because he helped hundreds of Westerners attain
glimpses of the Self and then sent them home to teach.

Living
By The Words of Bhagavan
By David Godman
· · · · · · · · · · · ·
This
book is a biography of Annamalai Swami who became Self-realized after many
years of effort and intimate association with his guru, Ramana Maharshi.
This book is unusual in two ways. First, it paints the most intimate portrait
of Ramana Maharshi that we've ever seen, based on Annamalai Swami's ten
years of interactions with Sri Ramana, first as his personal attendant and
then as supervisor of building projects at Sri Ramanasraman. Second,
unlike other Self-realized disciples of Sri Ramana whose biographies and
advice have been published, Annamalai Swami worked very hard for many years
to realize the Self, making his advice especially useful to seekers for
whom Self-realization does not come easily. The final section of the book
contains transcripts of conversations that Annamalai Swami held with seekers
in the 1980s.

The
Power of the Presence Part One
Edited by David Godman
· · · · · · · · · · · ·
In this book, eight
people who knew Ramana Maharshi tell in their own words how their lives
were transformed by him. David Godman compiled the accounts by searching
through piles of old documents, some previously unpublished, others translated
into English for the first time here. His sensitive editing allows the distinctive
voice of each person to come through. The book includes testimony by Rangan,
Sivaprakasam Pillai, Akhilandamma, Sadhu Natanananda, N.R. Krishnamurti
Aiyer, Chalam and Souris, and Swami Madhavatirtha.

The
Power of the Presence Part Two
Edited by David Godman
· · · · · · · · · · · ·
This is the second volume
in the series. Like the first, it contains autobiographical accounts by
people whose lives were influenced by Ramana Maharshi. For more information
about the format, see our description of Part
One. Among the book's many fascinating episodes is Lakshmana Swamy's
account of his Self-realization, which appeared in a slightly different
form in Godman's book No
Mind I Am The Self, which is now unfortunately out of print.
This volume includes testimony by Kunju Swami, Muruganar (C.K. Subramania
Iyer), T.P. Ramachandra Iyer, Chhanganlal V. Yogi, Lakshmana Swamy, and
Viswanatha Swami.
